World Kidney Day

March 14 2024 is World Kidney Day, a day that brings awareness to kidney disease and kidney health.

Our mission at Sunset Vets is to ensure elderly pets are given the very best of care, which includes doing all we can to support patients with complex conditions such as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

CKD is something that can be overlooked in animals. However, with as many as 10% of senior dogs, and 30-40% of senior cats affected, diagnosing and treating kidney disease early can make all the difference to a senior pet’s health.

Signs of kidney disease can depend on the breed and animal, but common symptoms to look out for include:

Signs of Kidney Disease in Pets

  • Weight loss
  • A decrease in appetite
  • Changes in how much your pet drinks
  • Changes in urine volume
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Ulcers in the mouth
  • Pale gums
  • Disorientation and headaches
  • Blood in urine
Kidney Disease in Pets

If your pet is diagnosed with kidney disease, it’s important to know that it is often a progressive illness without a definitive cure. However, the good news is, if diagnosed early enough, kidney disease can be well managed, sometimes for many years.

Palliative care is a form of treatment that enhances comfort and improves and maintains quality of life. Many pets suffering from kidney disease can benefit greatly under the care of a palliative care Veterinarian.

Sunset Vets works exclusively with palliative care patients with many of our patients suffering from kidney disease. By working closely with the family, our at-home palliative care model places the pet at the centre of the caregiving circle with care tailored specifically to the pet’s needs.

If you are concerned your pet may be suffering from kidney disease, please reach out. We’re here to support you.

Palliative care is a specialised area of veterinary medicine and here at Sunset Vets, it’s the focus of what we do. We know that the end of life is a period where our pets’ sometimes need a little extra TLC and for families who are nearing the end with their pets, the support of a palliative care team can make all the difference.
