It was this ideology that led Dr Jackie Campbell to create Sunset Vets. And what started with one Vet determined to redefine the way we support families and pets facing end-of-life decisions has now grown into Australia’s most well-respected provider of compassionate, end-of-life care.  

Through this growth however, our mission has remained the same. 

We want to fundamentally affect change to the way pets are cared for at end-of-life and encourage more families to become empowered around medical decision making for their pets. And while we’ve come a long way, there are still many families and pet lovers who aren’t aware that this special type of care exists. This is where you come in.

Palliative care is an approach to medicine that prioritises “comfort over cure” and the values of shared decision making with caregivers. When we approach our pets health with this very special lens of care, we often make different choices together with a family than we otherwise would if we were reaching for a curative outcome. This might mean we forgo things like hospitalisation or certain interventions at the end; we prioritise and deliver strong pain relief, even if we recognise this may shorten life or impact organ health; and we allow families to be a core part of every decision made, weighing up their beliefs, goals and any fears they may have around living well, death and dying.
