National Palliative Care Week is celebrated from 19-25 May and brings focus to the phrase ‘matters of life and death’.
For the Sunset Vets team, National Palliative Care Week is an opportunity to celebrate and bring focus to the crucial work we do every day. In addition, it allows us to bring awareness to something we are deeply passionate about, ensuring that all pet owners can access end-of-life care when their pet needs it the most.
What is Palliative Care?
Palliative care is the purpose behind Sunset Vets.
Palliative care for pets refers to the ideals of ensuring patient comfort even if curative medicine is no longer possible. It provides access to individualised age-appropriate health care and supporting families through the difficulties of end-of-life decision-making.
Simply put, it’s an extremely important part of veterinary medicine, and for families who have an elderly or terminally ill pet, accessing palliative care truly can be a matter of life and death.
However, unfortunately for some families, financial constraints can often make palliative and end-of-life care seem out of reach, no matter how crucial the need may be.
And this is where the Sunset Benevolence Fund comes in.
The Sunset Benevolence Fund
Several years ago, a much-loved client made the very difficult decision to say goodbye to her beautiful rescue Shepherd, Marie. This client had gone above and beyond for her four-legged friend and invested a significant amount of money into keeping her girl as comfortable as possible over the years. It was clear to everyone that these two shared a special bond and our hearts were warmed when two friends of this client, contacted us directly and offered to cover the cost of any further medical expenses.
When it came time to say goodbye to Marie, all costs had been paid in advance and this incredible kindness sparked the birth of the Sunset Benevolence Fund.
This fund has grown from a single act of benevolence into a giving program of charity and goodwill that supports sick or aging pets when their owners are financially unable to do so and are in genuine need of assistance.
It now acts as a lifeline for disadvantaged pet lovers, but it also provides an outlet for expressions of kindness and sympathy from others in the pet-loving community wanting to reach out or donate in memory of their own beloved pet.
In honour of National Palliative Care Week and in the interest of ensuring all pets who need it can access end-of-life care, we’d love to ask those who are in the position, to consider donating to the Sunset Benevolence Fund.
Your kind donation could make a world of difference to pets and their families in need.
