Sunset Vets Melbourne Dr Mel Palliative Care Vet

At Sunset Vets, our warm and supportive veterinarians bring not only clinical experience, but a personal understanding to the families they care for. In Melbourne, Dr Mel offers compassionate in-home care for senior pets and those nearing end of life.

More Than a Decade of Dedicated Care

Dr Mel graduated from Murdoch University in 2012 and has spent more than a decade working in general practice. Over the years, she developed a special interest in palliative and geriatric medicine, and in supporting pets and families through complex health challenges and difficult decisions.

Her approach is calm, thoughtful, and tailored. She believes that every pet deserves an individualised plan that prioritises comfort, dignity, and quality of life.

A Personal Journey That Shaped Her Compassion

Mel’s professional experience is informed by her own journey as a pet owner.

Her beloved Weimaraner, Leah, lived to 12 years of age and faced multiple health challenges, including an autoimmune condition, neurological pain, and arthritis. Supporting Leah required a highly personalised and evolving care plan.

Mel adjusted Leah’s environment to maximise comfort, including providing a low memory foam bed that was easy to access and supportive for sore joints. She managed arthritis with injections and oral pain relief and carefully reduced exercise to a level Leah could comfortably tolerate. Every decision centred around preserving Leah’s comfort and maintaining her quality of life.

Since Leah’s passing, advancements in veterinary medicine have expanded the options available for senior pets. Treatments such as acupuncture, hydrotherapy, newer long-acting arthritis injections, and CBD-based therapies may now provide additional comfort for pets facing similar challenges.

Even with her veterinary training, Mel found the emotional weight of decision-making significant.

“Even as a veterinarian, it was hard to know if I was doing enough and whether Leah was truly happy. When we made the decision to euthanise, it became a beautiful memory in itself to be at home surrounded by the whole family. We sat with her as she passed and spoke about the memories she had given us. It was beautiful, though deeply emotional.”

Empathy Backed by Experience

Having stood in the place of a pet owner navigating uncertainty, Mel understands how overwhelming these moments can feel. Questions around comfort, timing, and quality of life are rarely straightforward.

Her personal experience allows her to offer not only medical expertise, but genuine empathy. She values honest conversations, clear guidance, and thoughtful support. Care is always tailored, not only to the pet’s medical needs, but to the family’s wishes and emotional readiness.

Supporting Melbourne Families

For families in Melbourne seeking guidance for a senior or unwell pet, Dr Mel provides calm, knowledgeable support in the comfort of home. Whether discussing palliative care options, managing chronic illness, or navigating end-of-life decisions, her focus remains the same: comfort, dignity, and compassionate care.
