Recently, our Sunset Vets team had the privilege of supporting the Shipard family as they said farewell to their cherished cat, Jack. Surrounded by the love of her family in the comfort of their home, Jack’s final moments reflected what so many pet owners hope for: a gentle, dignified, and peaceful goodbye.
For many pet owners, the idea of an in-home euthanasia visit can feel overwhelming. Questions often arise: What will happen? How will my pet feel? How do I navigate my emotions? Our role is to guide families through this time with calm, compassionate support, helping both pets and the people who love them feel safe and cared for.
So what does a home farewell look like? While every visit is unique, there are a few common elements that help make the experience as peaceful as possible.

Comfort first
The visit takes place wherever your pet feels most at ease. This may be their favourite spot in the house, under a shady tree in the garden or in another special place. Being in a familiar environment helps them feel calm and secure.
Time to be together
Our visits usually last between 30 and 60 minutes, but there is no time pressure. This is your moment to be with your pet. Families are encouraged to move at their own pace, share final cuddles, tell stories, and cherish the memories they’ve created together.
Sedation and calm
To ensure every pet is as comfortable as is possible, a sedative and pain relief medication are given first. This approach helps even the more nervous of pets relax, allowing them to drift into a deep sleep while their family remains close.

A final farewell
When everyone feels ready, a special anaesthetic medication is administered, and your pet passes away peacefully. Families are welcome to remain close, holding and comforting their companion throughout.
Aftercare
After your pet’s farewell, our vet will guide you through the aftercare plan that has been arranged. This might involve support from one of our trusted cremation partners or a home burial, depending on your wishes. We aim to make this process as gentle and reassuring as possible, so you can focus on the memories you shared with your companion.
Ongoing Support
We also provide ongoing grief support for families, because saying goodbye doesn’t end when the visit is over. Our team is here to listen, guide, and offer comfort as you navigate the days and weeks after your pet’s passing.
Jack’s farewell reminds us of the profound bond between pets and their families. It also shows what a home goodbye can look like, gentle, dignified, and filled with love. While no goodbye is easy, the right environment and compassionate care can help make it a truly peaceful experience.
At Sunset Vets, we are committed to ensuring that every farewell honours the life your pet has lived and the love you share.
