Dr Karen

Palliative Care Veterinarian

Dr Karen is known for her gentle nature, her warmth and compassion. As such, she is a perfect fit for the Sunset team, providing immense comfort to the families of pets in her care. In her early years, Karen worked as a Veterinary Nurse at the University of Queensland Veterinary Teaching Hospital and after a number of years in this role, she caught the eye of a senior staff member who convinced her that she really should train to become a veterinarian herself. This led her to enrol and complete a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, graduating with Honours in 2006.

Following University Dr Karen began practicing in the suburbs of Brisbane where she very quickly developed a loyal following of clients and moved rapidly into practice ownership. Her clinic was known as one of the most welcoming practices around. After 14 years of running the practice, a new challenge was calling, leading her to us and we’re so glad she’s here.

Dr Karen currently lives in Brisbane with her husband, daughter, two fluffy ginger cats, an Italian greyhound, a native bee hive, and a praying mantis known as Manty Papaya.

It always starts with one. Who was your special pet? Our first dog – Scout, who was with us for 18 years. Caring for her helped us grow together as a family.

What else are you passionate about? I love insects, my garden, and my compost pile!

What do you love about palliative medicine? I believe older pets are special, and each one has their own story. I enjoy being able to find small ways to help them enjoy life as they age.

Qualifications:  Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) Currently Studying post graduate qualifications in Emergency and Critical Care.
