Dr Tanji

Palliative Care Veterinarian

Dr Tanji and Canine

Dr Tanji is an animal lover through and through and one of those veterinarians who just radiates warmth and compassion. With more than a decade of clinical experience, her passion for supporting families through their journey led her to Sunset Vets and we are so grateful she has joined us.

After graduating from the University of Melbourne in 2014, Dr Tanji commenced her veterinary career in rural NSW before working in both semi-rural and urban clinics. These varied experiences allowed her to care for pets and families from many different backgrounds, shaping her calm and adaptable approach. Life eventually led her to Brisbane, where she and her husband have created a small homestead, surrounded by animals and a slower, more grounded way of living.

Alongside her work in general practice, Tanji has undertaken further study in small animal medicine and is a highly proficient surgeon. She is a lifelong learner and is committed to delivering thoughtful, high-quality care, tailored to each patient, while always remaining mindful of what matters most during the difficult times.

In her spare moments Dr Tanji also volunteers time with Riding for the Disabled Australia, an experience which has helped cement her belief in the power of the human-animal bond. Seeing the comfort and confidence animals can bring to people has shaped the way she supports families at end of life. She understands how significant your relationship with your pet is, and strives to create a space that feels safe, unhurried, and supportive as you say goodbye.

Special interests: Wildlife and Zoo Medicine, as well as all elements of small animal care and surgery.

It always starts with one. Who was your special pet?

My first truly special pet was my first horse, Finnigan. He was my best friend through all high school, two university degrees and the first 5 years of my veterinary career. It wasn’t abnormal to find me at the stables late at night after a long day of studying, riding in the moonlight or studying in his stall. I cared for Finn all through his geriatric years until our final goodbye, which still brings me to tears many years later. I was truly lucky to have such a friend.

What do you love about palliative medicine? As an avid animal-lover, I feel privileged to be able to ensure that animals can live out their days as comfortably as possible, and be allowed to pass away peacefully when the time arises.

Qualifications: Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Biosciences, Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine.
